In the semi-finals, Hull faced Derby County. A commanding 3–0 victory at the MKM Stadium gave Bruce’s side control of the tie before Derby won the second leg 2–0. Hull advanced 3–2 on aggregate to reach Wembley.

The play-off final against Sheffield Wednesday on 28 May 2016 was a tense and closely contested affair. Chances were limited until Mohamed Diamé produced the decisive moment in the 72nd minute, firing an outstanding strike into the corner of the net.

Hull defended superbly during the closing stages to secure a 1–0 victory and, with it, an immediate return to the Premier League.
